Wanderlust : Hillsville, VA 10.30.13 - 11.2.13 - Day 3 - Wineries and Mayberry

As we initially drove into Virginia, we passed several signs for wineries and put a stop on our Must-Do list during our visit. My mother took charge of the search to find the perfect spot for us to tour that was also kid-friendly. She found Old North State Winery in Mt. Airy, NC, about 30 minutes from Hillsville, VA.

We were able to tour the wine cellar and learned how the process of making their many wines.

Of course, then we got to taste them, which was delightful. When we found that they also served food, it was a done deal. Our family loves food, you see. Like, a lot. See how excited my dad is about his BLT?!

As luck would have it, Mayberry was just right down the road too.  Yes, that Mayberry. Mt. Airy, NC is the actual shoot location for The Andy Griffith Show and many of the shops have stayed true to the era.

My dad swears that Canon looks like Opie.  Do you see the resemblance?  I really don't.

Why yes, you can still get your hair cut at Floyd's Barber Shop.  Unfortunately, Floyd no longer works there, but the nice gentleman that is there will do a good job, I am sure. He is probably as old as Floyd would be now, though, so watch out for shaky hands and straight razors at your throat.  Just sayin'.

There were toy stores that weren't filled to the brim with electronic gadgets or plastic toys that fall apart under a three year old's keep, but rather time-tested wooden toys and puzzles that encourage children to use their imagination.  There were bakeries that invited you in with pies, cookies, brownies, and milkshakes - all hand-made of course. There were hardware stores that I imagine as keeping running tabs for the locals.

If it weren't for all of the modern cars and crowds of people, I would have almost believed I had stepped back in time. That, and everything was in color.

Come back tomorrow so that I may regale you tales of the rest of that day. I know you are holding your breath.
